It’s About You: SXSW 2011 Accepted Film

This is a personal journey film about singer/songwriter John Mellencamp. It was made during his summer 2009 tour with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson; Mellencamp also recorded his new album in three historical locations during the month and a half tour. The story is told through the eyes of the father/son film making team of Kurt and Ian Markus, neither of whom had ever made a film before. The entire 90-minute film is shot on super8, to stunning effect. This is not a retrospective film with interviews. It is of the moment.

It’s About You is a new musical documentary that offers a rare and intimate look at the life and music of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Mellencamp. The film premiered at this year’s SXSW festival and follows Mellencamp on his summer 2009 concert tour and during the recording of his most recent album, 2010′s universally acclaimed No Better Than This, the sessions for which took place at American musical and historical landmarks, including Sun Studios in Memphis and the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, GA. We see Mellencamp recording — with a single mike and mono tape recorder more than half a century old — in the same hotel room where legendary bluesman Robert Johnson created some of his most memorable work.

The Tempest

After a harrowing shipwreck, the members of a royal court are washed ashore on various parts of a mysterious island. Their fateful arrival on this particular island is no coincidence. The exiled Prospera has used her magical powers to guide the ship here to settle a score with the very men who banished her from her homeland. Abetted by her sometimes unwilling aides, Ariel and Caliban, Prospera puts her former tormentors through some dangerous and often hilarious adventures. However, when the king’s son, Ferdinand, meets her daughter, Miranda, it is love at first sight – a kind of magic that even Prospera is powerless to control.

Chaddha and D’Souza families have been friends for as long as they can remember celebrating Diwali and Christmas together with equal gusto. But when Anjali Chaddha and Steven D’Souza fall in love, the friendship goes kaput. Anjali and Steven elope and get married. Many years later, a young man named Raja (Anil Kapoor) claiming to be son of Anjali and Steven comes to meet his maternal and paternal grandparents. Quite evidently, he is cold shouldered by all. Over the time, he manages to win over his grandparents of both sides but not Jassi chachu and Moses uncle who doubt Raja’s actual intentions.
